Eye-Opening Stats About Web Design
We just surveyed about six long articles full of industry statistics on website design and usage so you don’t have to! After a while, our eyes started to cross, and we needed more coffee, stat! But after looking at some of the numbers, we came up with a few that every website owner should look at and understand. We’ll try and simplify the important stuff.
What do people react positively to on a website?
This one’s pretty simple. Your website visitors like:
- Big, bold images: 40%
- Bright colors: 38%
- Use of video: 21%
Yes, the “wow” factor is important. Whatever you are presenting to your public, make it stand out.
What causes customers to leave a website?
- Slow loading content: 88.5%
- Non-responsive site: 73.1%
- Bad navigation: 61.5%
Message: your website has got to work. It has to load quickly, the links have to work, and it has to be easy and intuitive to move from section to section of the website.
Fun stat: if your mobile site loads 0.1 second faster, conversions can be 8.4% higher.
Why is good website design important?
Here are some stats we found that answer that question.
94% of first impressions of a website are design-related. Another related stat is that it takes less than 10 seconds for a user to form an impression about the website, the company and the brand. That underlines the importance of having a well-designed site, with bold images and colors to catch the eye, and useful, relevant content to attract and interest the reader. You have less than 10 seconds to catch their eye and keep it.
88% of online shoppers are less likely to return to a site if it has a bad user experience. Translated: if a link doesn’t work, or the user can’t quickly access info about your product or service, they’ll click away and go look at something else. Maybe your competitor’s site.
47% of users expect a site to load in 2 seconds or less. They are not patient, these users of yours! Time is important to everyone, and waiting for a site to load is not a good way to spend that time.
90% of users believe image quality is an important factor in making a purchase decision. We’re not talking out-of-focus images here, we’re talking about striking, eye-catching images, full of life and color, that show off your products and services and make your visitors think “I want one of those!” Image quality is a function of a good website design, and professional execution.
54.8% of all Internet traffic is seen on mobile devices. It was around 2016 when mobile became the tool used by the majority of Internet users, and that figure has continued to grow since. More than half your customers will access your site via smart phones or tablets, not desktop. It is therefore vital that your site is attractive and appealing to mobile users.
Your company can have the best products and services in the world, but if you can’t present those products and services to your customers on a well-designed, properly functional and well-maintained website, you’re not going to close the sale.
